The Queensland Parliament. Brisbane, Yesterday. The Queenland Parliament was opened to-day by the Acting-Governor. In his speech on the occasion his Excellency stated that the agreement , . which had been provisionally made by a syndicate for the construction of the Transcontinental Railway, would be submitted for their approval and ratification. The action which had been taken by the Government regarding the annexation of New Guinea was under consideration by the Imperial Government,' but had not yet been sanctioned. The regulations for promoting and controlling the importation of Indian Coolies would be submitted for approval, and if adopted would provide a satisfactory solution for the em- ■ harassing question with regard to the present pbsition ot the supply of labor. The demand for land had been well maintained during the past year, and continued without abatement. Negotiations for accelerating the Postal Service between Europe and the colony had been brought to a satisfactory termination, and arrangements had been , made with the British India Steam Navigation Company for expediting the transit of mails, and the establishment of a fortnightly service from the end of ; the current year also had been decided upon. The question of immigration ■ had been considered, and measures were being adopted to promote the in- • troduction of a suitable class of immi- ’ grants. Melbourne, To-day. The Government has not yet come to a final decision on the proposal of Mr Twopeny, that the Colonial Exhibi- ; tion should be held in London. It is considered improbable that the' pro- ■ posers will receive any actual official t support -from the Government. Mining Accident. Telegrams are to hand from Eaglehawk reporting that a cage in one of the : mines fell a distance of 640 feet, ; and two men at the bottom of the shaft were crushed to death in a most horrible manner.
