At a few. minutes to six last night a fire broke out in a nine-roomed house in Abel Smith street, owned and occupied by Mr ■- Lawrence. The family had tea between; I '' four and five o’clock in the kitchen! add ’ then went into the parlor, when their at- r , tention was called by the smoke, And the ' kitchen was discovered in!' a blaze. The flames spread very rapidly, only a tittle of the front room furniture being saved. The house was insured in the National for L4OO, and the furniture for L2so’ in . the Union. The fire spread rapidly to the adjoining five - roomed cottage, owned and occupied by ■ Oap-y tain Short, of the Comet. Nearly alhj.j? the con,tents were got out safely. r Cajßr.-.„‘ t*iin and Mrs Short were both absent from " Wellington, but the family occupied the house, which was insured in the South British for L 250. It is not known if the furniture is insured. The house of Mr Prose was also on fire, bat not much damage was done, the contents being re- t ; : moved. The house and furniture were; insured for L3OO in the South but the loss is trifling. Captain Rose, Manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, has received a telegram from the captain of the barque Eatella, dated from White’s Bay, stating that ho put into Port Underwood on Thursday, and would proceed at the first opportunity. All is well, but ha had some sails.. The Eatella left London for ; - 3 Wellington February 15. ' —c

Nothing is knowh as to how the accident occurred, but it is surmised that Regan, who was the worse for drink, had either been lying on the line or been knocked down when walking on- the line from Riverton, which he "was compelled to do, through not possessing enough money to pay his fare.
