A tea meeting and entertainment in connection with the Elgin Sunday school will be held in the State schoolroom, Elgin, on Thursday next. The choir of St Stephen’s Church, together with their friends,, intend to give them assistance, and it is hoped that there will be sufficient results, to form a library; in connection with the school. , :

He pleaded guilty through ignorance of the law', and was fined in the minimum penalty of L 5 with four guineas costs. I; The oases against John Purcell and James Mills, for obtaining money bj false pretences by selling casks of water for whiskey and brandy to certain publicans, were heard at Auckland yesterday. Two cases were diamiaaed*and three adjourned. The Magistrate held there was not sufficient evidence against Mills, and the information against Purcell was laid under the wrong section of the Vagrant Act.

When the train from Tnvercargill to Riverton was approaching the latter place on Thursday night the driver noticed a dark object in front of the engine, and then saw a hat blown across the track. The engine was stopped, and it was found that a man named Jeremiah Regan, had been caught by the cowcatcher and carried 200 yards. On being taken to Riverton Hospital Regan’s skull was found to be severely lacerated. His left arm was broken in two places, his back bruised, and he had also sustained concussion of the brain. Regan was insensible when admitted, and up to last night had continued so.

Miss Eloise Juno, an actress well known both on the English and colonial stage, will make her first appearance in Ashburton on Wednesday evening next, at the Town Hall, supported by a very strong company. Miss Juno is now playing in Christchurch, where she has bean drawing excellent houses, and has earned warm encomiums from the local press. The opening piece of the season here, which is limited to tluee nights, will be “ Leah, the Forsaken,” and on the following evenings will be played “ Jeanie Deans ” and “ East Lynne.” As all these plays are popular, we expect to sea the Town Hall crowded. The opportunity of witnessing a first-class performance is so seldom accorded us that we may rely upon its being taken advantage of on this occasion.
