Thß Oity Council has carried resolutions condemning the appropriation of a paddock at "the back of the Government Hotfrio for the University. A requisition Will ie forwarded to the Auckland membere'tooppese the proposed site. The Costley Bequests, executors of Cpstley’s trust have eetiipated the value of properties as follows;—Real estate, 118,000 ; mortgages, 137,400 ; fixed deposits, 112,000 ; shares, 11,930; total, 179,330; present annual income, 14858. The executors ate resolved ;to realise on the freehold estate, notwithstanding the expression of opinion from the charities interested and the public favor in retaining them. . A Disappointment., A laiiie number of excursionists went down the harbor this morning to see the Austral, ■ which anchored outside last night.several miles north of the Heads. On., the excursionists reaching the place, however, it- was found the ste&mer was nowhere ; to be seen, having doubtless gone out at fto early hour this morning. Accident to a Steamer. Nelson, To-day. Tbeateamer St Kilda, in coming into theharbor late on ah ebb tide yesterday, grounded on the p.jnt of the boulder bank opposite Arrow Rock. She got ofif four o’clock this morning, without sustaining any damage. Suspicions Fire. ; Timabu, To-day. At< 4 o’clock. this, morning a fire broke out in an unoccupied three-roomed house in Sophia street, behind Parsons’ foundry. The. Brigade were promptly on the spot and extinguished the flames in a short time.-; The circumstances are very suspicious,, tar, and kerosene having been plentifully poured out on the floor and walls. The fire evidently was kindled in three places simultaneously. The house was only damaged and not destroyed, thanks to the promptitude of the Brigade. It was owned.by J. Parsons, sent., iron founder, and. insured in the Liverpool, London and Globe for 1200. The police ara investigating the circumstances. Immigration. <■ • ‘ Dunedin, To-day.
