BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly, meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening, whan there were present—His Worship the Mayor, and Gra J. Orr, A. Orr, W. Roberts, J. Ivess, R. Bird, S. Nelson, A. Harrison and G. H. St. Hill. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. mayor’s statement. The Mayur stated that the balance at the Bank had been reduced to L9ll 4s 4d, and the rates collected amounted to L 568 17s. CANCELLATION OF LEASE. Mr Fruhaut wrote asking that his lease be cancelled, as he was not in a position to carry out the conditions.—The Mayor said that he had a the letter saying that the request would not be entertained, and Mr Fruhauf had replied that he could not pay up, and asking for time, —lt was decided to give the applicant a month’s notice to pay. (TRANSFERENCE ok LEASE. Mr O. W. Purnell wrote on behalf of Mr F. Ferriman asking that the lease of T.S. 361 be transferred to Mr R. Lancaster.—The request was granted. DRAINAGE. Mr Hugo Priedlander wrote asking for permission of the Council to his connecting the outfall drain by a pipe to the land opposite the Belt, for drainage purposes. It was resolved ‘■hat the application should not be entertained. PLANTING. Cr John Orr jjreported on behalf of the Planting Committee, that they had accepted the tender of Messrs Sealy Bros, in the sum of H 4, for planting and replanting the reserves near the Old Men’s Home. —Adopted. THE SEALY CASE. The Mayor reported that the Committee appointed to enquire into the case of Sealy’s buildings had met, but that the Engineer was mt present, owing to his being at Christchurch. —It was decided that another meeting of the Committee be called to enable the Engineer to be present. surveyor's report. The following report was read:— (i). The Woiks Committee received two tenders for supplying shingle- That of John Griffin at is 4d and is yd for road and footpath shingle respectively, being the lowest, was accepted.—(2). By order of the Planting Committee, a man has been put on to dig round the trees in the different plantations. —(3). The labor gang have been engaged in re-forming Cameron and Havelock streets; forming cab and carriers’ stands; metalling street crossings; erecting platform in Baring square ; repairing footpaths; fixing lamp-post in Cameron street; clearing footpaths and side channels; making and fixing culverts and bridges; attending to water supply, etc. The report as read was adopted. inspector’s report.

The Inspector’s of Nuisances report was read as follows;

.Since last meeting I have the honor to lender my report as follows:—(i) Re closets; I have to report jo the Council that eight new closet pans have been placed in closets requiring them since last meeting.—(2) Re slops, rubbish, and other refuse matter: I have to report that a fair quantity of rubbish has been removed; also, that-I ha ’e no complaints to make to the Council.—(3) Re stray cattle : I have to report that at the last Court day a number of residents, who were liable for breaking the bye-laws, were dealt with; also, that there arc ‘a few cases for the next Court day. The report was adopted.

auditobs. The Town Clerk reported: that Messrs W. H. (Sundry and J. 0. Duncan had been elected auditors for the borough. IMPOUNDING CAITLB. Cr Nelson mentioned that certain cattle belonging to Mr Johns had been impounded when on the property of the borough, and were released by, order of the Clerk. He wished to know who ■would pay Mr Price, as Mr Johns, had refused. —Cr J. Orr explained that he had asked- Mr Johns to let his cattle graze in the plantation, and that the mistake was due to him (Cr Orr), although he acted with the best intention. —lt was decided that the Council liquidate the cost. FIRE BRIGADE COMMITTEE.

Cr Harrison said that as one of the Fire Brigade Committee had been ac'■orded six months’ leave, it caused some inconvenience, and he moved that Or Nelson.be a member of the Committee in place of Or R. Friedlander. —The motion was carried. THE BAND PLATFORM. Cr St Hill called attention to the fact that the platform which had been erected in Baring square would be greatly improved by being painted.—lt was resolved hat the work be done, Cr Harrison alone dissenting. ; ■» ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of L 156 16s were passed for payment, and the Council adjourned.
