WAKANUI ROAD BOARD.

The fi-st meeting of the. pew .Board for the Wakanui Road District was ‘held, to-day, when there were present Messrs Mayo, Bro.wn>|, Megson, Bruce . and Walsh. j . ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. !. , On the motion of Mr Megson, secojnded by Mr Bruce, Mr Mayo was chosen Chairman for the ensuing year. 1 STORM-WATER. A letter was read from the Secretary of theßakaia asking the Bbdrd ; tO nominate a member Joe the Committee. —The Clerk was instructed to acknowledge -tjje that the Board' db : not'consider they are interested in the matter. I ; A letter, read at the previous meeting, from Mr T. Olephane, asking permission ,tp deepen a fditoh ifa WilSon’e road, and also mentioning that in i the upper side of his land, a bridge built to let the wateCi.rtfn ont needed a larger outlet, was considered. —Mr D. Wilson waited on the Board concerning | the! matter, and objected to the request bpihg complied with. —The Surveyor was directed to see that the terms of his letter be Icat-’ tied'out)r ■ .'i.- I '’'. i, NORTH-EAST BELT. | The Town Clprk fqryaniing a resolution of the Bordiigh Oouhoil, asking the Board to bear half the cost of forming a road on the North-East Town Belt.— Resolved—“That'the proposal cannot be entertained, as it is out of the jurisdiction of.the,,Board.” , > ! v 1 SOUTH-EAST BELT. ! The Town Clerk wrote enclosing j an account of Ll2 ifob r work done on jthe South-East Town Belt.—lt was decided that the Board cannot entertain it, as the place,is outside’ the boundary; ; petitions. ! Petitions were received from ratepayers asking for repairs' to footpaths near ■ Trevor’s road and at Hampstead.—lt yae readied that in both instances the matter be left in the hands of the Chairman and Surveyor with power to act. surveyor's EEPpax, j The following repbrt woS read : j Gentlemen, —We have the honor to tender our report,as. follows.:7T-(i)!;Wakßhui School road : r As "instructed at last meeting, we have inspected the gullies crossing the road, with a view to ascertaining the respective costs of either putting id large concrete culverts or making fords. The cost of culverts we estimated would be L 43, and that of fords L 361 ■ With regard to fords, if this road is likely'to have much traffic, which is probable while the river road is impassable, it would probably be objectionable to have fords across deep gullies like these—two of which are about five feet deep, and one three feet six inches, as it be a heavy pu\li for teams heavily laden, though they would in time of floods have a larger carrying, capacity ; than. culverts. We should recommend that the Board issue notices to persons through whose land channels and gullies traverse to. keep the same free from obstructions, in the 1- shape of fences, etc;—(?.) Wilson’s road, and Wakanui School road ; In consequence’ of the river road being impassable all the traffic is diverted on to these roads, and as they have not a large quantity of metal on them, and whatlsoh is not particularly good, the consequence is they f are .being very, much cut up, the traffic’in fact cutting^right through the metal. They want about ten yards to the chain of good shingle putting on them, and the cost would be about L120. — (3) Great South Road: Tenders were not called for this work authorised at last meeting, pending the reply from the Upper Ashburton Road Board. As that Board will not consent to bear part of the cost of maintaining, this. ror4iJhe work will be put in hind as soon as' possible. With regard to the re-forming and levelling of places, it not being a large.job, and one. cqqiq. hardly be defihed'ih'a specincatidh, 'iye think it would be advisable to point out to some reliable contractor what is required, and,get the price from him, which 'Cotlld^be ; Submitted to the approval of the member representing the Ward. The metalling required afterwards could be, let by public that'the formation, etc., of this street be left,’ over till the spring, as, if formed in the winter months it would probably become very, slpppy ■and‘hot ! naffic.°''li lifts a gbod'surface now. though rather uneven. (5) ChertsCy Road: This road has suffered considerably during the wet weather some time ago, the storm having scoured out’numerous holes. We have given the contractor for maintenance notice tb fill them all up. There is a large growth of tussocks on the metalled pqrfipn. which, if cleared, say, tfsria f width'of‘tkeivc feet, would, give a good way for traffic as the shingle is well, set.—(6) Seafield Road : We would call the attention of the Board to our previous report with reference to this road. We append to this report a list of works in each ward that would probably be i-eqnired ere long.-' 'ln some instances petitions for these have been before the Board for some time.

The following is the list of works No. I Ward : Princes street, forming, Ll 5 ; Princes street, metalling, L3S 5 roads in R.S. 4904, L3S; Hampstead road, metalling-, culvprls, etc, L9O; Trevorton, metalling, culve'rts", etc., LSO ; North-east Belt (half cost), LSO; Great South road, 140 ; maintenance, Li 5. A ditch, should bo,nwl§. on each; side, and the stuff taken out should be used to repair the road.—lt was resolved that tenders be called for clearing off the tussocks, giving a width of 14ft in the centre of the road. , . ; v );; ; . | Mr 'Bruce said that this road was so. dangerous that he thought an accident would happen there. ; . • There was not sufficient provision for taking off thej water. —The Surveyor said that the work; was estimated to coat Llol.—On the ino-i tion of Mr Megson, seconded by Mr; Brnce, it was resolved that tenders be’ called for the work.
