LICENSING COURT.

The annual meeting of the Upper Ashburton Licensing Committee was held at the Courthouse this morning. Present— Messrs Harper (Chairman), Bullock, Dudley, McLean, and Stitt.—Mr Wilding, on behalf of George Wood, applied for a license for a house Mr Wood proposed to build in the district of Allenton. A petition was lodged against the granting of a license for the proposed house, but Mr Wilding pointed out that the petitioners lived outside the district, and had therefore no right to petition against the granting of a license. The ratepayers had decided in favor of an increase of licenses in the district, and further contended that a licensed house was urgently required in the neighborhood where Mr Wood proposed to build. —Mr Crisp then applied for a license of a house proposed to be built by Mr J. O. Dolman, also in the district of Allenton. —A petition was also lodged against this application, but Mr Crisp contended that the petitioners had failed to comply with the Act, and the petition was therefore not admissable Plans of both the proposed houses were handed in to the Committee. Several ratepayers appeared in support of the petitions, and urged the Beuch not to grant any license for the district.—The Bench retired for a short time, and on resuming the Chairman said the Committee were of opinion that a licensed house was not required in the district, and could not therefore hold out any hope to either of the applicants that a license would be granted, should either of the proposed houses be built. —The Court then adjourned.
