THE COLONIAL TREASURER.
[by telegraph] Nelson,' Tb-day.
, Major Atkinson delivered his address pn national insurance at the Theatre last night. 800 pars* ns were present and accorded him a most favorable reception. His address was in most respects similar to his previous utterances elsewhere, bat he said he proposed in his’ scheme to inake it optional whether persons'joined friendly societies or came under the scheme. He stated that the 'national insurance accounts would be kept separate, and that he- felt certain that contributions would be more than sufficient to provide for the benefits stated, and that any excess should be for the benefit /bf the people, either by increasing the sick allowance, or annuities, or by a return similar to an insurance bonne; A number of questions were asked, and on the motion of Mr Levestam, M;H.B., seconded by the Hon. J. Barnicoat, a hearty vote of thanks for the able address was carried by acclamation. A similar vote to the Mayor, who occupied the chair, terminated the proceedings.
