‘ Ashburton Guardian Office, • • Thursday afternoon. '•* Messrs Matson, Cox and Co. report on the "live stock market for the Ashburton district the week ending May 30th, 1883, as follows ; On Tuesday, at the Association yards, J' Ashburton, the usual sale of live stock was .held, hut for any business that was done it might almost as well not have been held. In sheep the total entry was small, principally made-up-of merino wethers and ewes in low condition* and as this class of sheep is not in -drihand the bulk had to be turned out unsold. RWesdffpred-several.,lines of young crossbred wethers and crossbred ewes and crossbred lambs, but the prices realised would not be considered satisfactory to the breeders. In rattle the entry was fair, made up of a few of good beef and stores of a better quality than usual. The beef sold fairly, but very low •■ 1 prices for store cattle had to be accepted for anything sold. There was only one small line vof pigs. ’ Our entries for the day consisted of i.lojsheep and 31 head of cattle, for Messrs O. Digby, D. McCormick, H. T. Smith, F. M. Foster, H. Smith, G. Coe, J. Primmer, H. Johnstone, T. T. Brown, J. Corbett, A Kincaird, G. Wilson and others, and our sales were as follows, viz.Bo crossbred at ' 13s 9d;42 do at i3sgd; 248 merino wethers, . iff yg-dd; 263' crossbred lambs, $s 8d; 148 crossbred lambs, 7s 3d; 133 merino ewes, 3s • 3di etc?/ dtc. In cattle we sold iat L6los; 1 at L 62s 6d; 2at Ls; lat L 4; lat L 7; lat Li 12s fid; I at L 3; 1 at L6 10s; 8 at 325; 3 at L 4 Ss; 3atLs as fid. We quote an improved demand for good farms, either to lease or pur- . . .diase, and we could place such if they were 1 obtainable.
