CANTERBURY JOOKEY OttJß. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s annual meeting was held yesterday. The treasurer's statement showed L6,67fi to hare been paid in stakes this year, as against L 4,974 last year. The condition of the Club is improving. The liabilities to the bank have been reduced from L 4,388 to L 2,188. The New Year’s Day meeting was so successful that it should be a regular fixture. L 420 has; been expended on a shilling stand, etc., Ll3l spent on the railway to the course, and L 173 on improving the training gallop. ‘ It is proposed to lay down another gallop. The totalisator realised L 2,838. The nominations for the Derby of 1883 are 38; and for 1884, 52. A similar increase was noted in the Welcome and Champagne Stakes. The grounds, etc., were in good order. It was proposed to carry out ornamental planting. ; The balance-sheet showed i the receipts to have been L 10.490, and the expenditure L 7,699. Exclusive of L 6,616 on account of grand stand, .the liabilities are L 2,654 and the assets L9,168‘. A proposal to appoint a paid handicapper and ask other clubs to accept him and contribute • towards the salary was negatived. An increase of the secretary’s salary was recommended to the Committee. -A proposal fixing the minimum’ weight in handicaps at fist 71b was lost.
