ANNUAL MEETING.

The special annual meeting of the Borough Council was held at the Chambers this afternoon. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Crs St Hill, Nelson, A. Orr, and Bird. The Clerk read the clause in the Act under which the meeting was convened. His Worship the Mayor said that the meeting was called for the purpose of confirming the balance sheets and auditors’ report of the Council for the past year.. The-balance-sheet now before the Council was open for discussion.

Cr St Hill drew the attention of the Council to the item for repairing lamps L 39 Is fid. He certainly thought that it was excessive.

The Mayor stated that the item included several repairs, including new ironwork, etc., and new lamps. Or St. Hill said that two or three lamps ware not lighted from the 28th April to May sth. He knew for a fact that some of -the glasses of the lamps were taken away and stored in sheds, and no one knew anything about them. He thought that if new lamps were supplied they should not be charged under .the head of “repairs to lamps,” as in the balance-sheet before them. By letting a contract for repairing the lamps, he thought the Council would effect a saving. Cr Orr said that the Gas Company could not light the lamps which Cr St. Hill had referred to, because they were not repaired during the time.

Cr Nelson said he could see that the the item was a very large one for lamps, and it was hardly right to pass the balauce- ■ sheet if the item was unsuisfactory. His Worship the Mayor said that the repairing of the lamps was let to Mr .Hyde for-twelve months. He did not : think that any overcharge had been made.

Or St Hill said he did not wish to dispute any of the accounts, but he certainly thought the auditors should not allow six hew lamps to be charged in the balancesheet as repairs to lamps. The matter then dropped. Cr St Hill moved the adoption of the balance-sheet and report. Or A. Orr seconded the resolution, which was carried unanimously. His Worship then signed the balancesheet, after which the meeting adjourned. A meeting of the Works Committee of the Borough Council was held this afternoon.. Certain works referred to in the Engineer’s and inspectors of Nuisances reports were considered.
