v Discharged. Wellington, To-day. Mackay, the bedroom steward of the Penguin, who was arrested on a charge of theft from a passenger named Adams, was discharged. A Serious Accident. An accident occurred on board the barque Rebecca Crowel. A heavy case slipped out of the sling and fell on a young man named Arnold, severely crushing his spine, resulting in paralysis of the whole of the left aide. Suspected Incendiarism. New Plymouth, To-day A six-roomed house at Henuij next Armitage’s tannery, owned by Mrvßoswell, was burned to the ground this morning at 2 o’clock. Thera was a great body of flame, the fire burning for an hour. There is evidence that it was not accidental, as in the woolshed adjoining some canvas was found soaked with kerosene, as was the floor as wall, the object evidently being to destroy the woolsheds as well as the house. Mr Boswell, the owner of the house, is at present in Wellington. He was about to remove into it, and some of his furniture, including a piano, had been taken into it only yesterday, and his family expected to go into the house to-day. The insurances on the. house were—L2oo on the building in the Standard, L 250 on the furniture and the piano. On the three woolsheds adjoining and the,stock-in-trade of the tannery, which were not burnt, there was L 650 ia the Standard. Fire.
Wanganui, To-day. A fire broke out last night an .the premises of Mr McDuff, coachbuilder, and caused damage to the extent of about Ll 5. It then caught the adjoining premises, Ross’s furniture warehouse, destroying property to the extent of about Ll5O. If it had not been promptly stopped ij would have been a big fire. The insurances are—McDuff s stock in the Standard for L2OO, a floating policy on customers' goods of LIOO, Ross’s building in. (ha Royal for LSOO, and the stock in the South British for LBOO (re-insured in the New Zealand for L 500), New Zealand L3OO, New Zealand Victoria L4oo—total, L 2,000. A Good Yield. Dunedin, To-day. The Tipperary Company, at Macetown, obtained 6950 z of retorted gold from 413 tons of stone. Bible Beading in Schools. Mr M. W. Green has prepared a Bill to be read in conjunction with the. Education Act, allowing committees to appoint special periods during school hours, not exceeding thirty minutes, during which Bible reading shall be given under the supervision of the State teacher ; also for the inculcation of lessons in morality and virtue, but no denominational religious teaching to be given. No child whose parents object is to attend. Ministers may also give concurrent religious instruction, and teachers committing a breach hereof shall, if convicted, be dismissed. Railway Traffic ResumedThe slip at Purakanui was cleared away in time for this morning’s trains to pass as usual.
Inspection of Machinery The Trades and Labor Council will ask the Colonial Secretary to appoint da inspector of machinery to see that all machinery in workshops is properly guarded.
