[per press association.] Crime in Taranaki.

Mew Plymouth, To-day.

The Supreme Court was, opened to-day by Mr Justice (yillioa. In the charge to the Grand Jury, His Honor said the cases were somewhat numerous, but not more than was to be.expected in a growing population. The majority of the cases came from out districts, on the outposts of civilisation, where wild and lawless characters congregated. At the sme time the cases were not of a heinous character, none of the higher class being in the calendar. There are ten charges against eight persons, three of whom are Maoris. The most serious was a charge of arson. There was a prisoner on bail '•ommitted on a charge of forgery in the Bank passbook. As the Judge was given to understand that there was a doubt as to his surrendering to his bail, he would order him to be called before the bill was sent to the Grand Jury, so that it might not be necessary to delay the case. Acquitted.

At the Supreme Court Hori Ngrao, alias T b Kooti, charged with stealing a horse from Mr Comewall, at Stratford, was found not guilty, and discharged.

Fatal Accident. Wanganui, To-day.

J. M. Bentram, a passenger by the Hula from Wellington, fell overboard last night. At about twenty minutes to nine, when off Mana Island, ho was standing on the bridge leaning against the rail. He lost his balance and fell overboard. It was too rough to lower a boat, but a rope was immediately thrown out. It was of no avail, however. He was a draper of Halcombe. An enquiry will probably be held to-day.
