REPORTING EXTRAORDINARY.

To the Editor. 1

Sir, — As 1 take a great interest in political matters, I attended Major At* kinson’a lecture in the Town Hall last evening, and was much edified thereby. Turning, however, to the report in your morning contemporary, I was considerably astonished to find the Colonial Treasurer was credited with having treated'of several subjects that, if I can trust my own senses, henever made the, slightest reference to. It ia very kind of, the Mail t©supplement the Major’s this but those who consider that a newspaper should simply report what takes place at a meeting are apt'to be rather puzzled they find set down something utterly different to what was actually .said. Can you ex* plain this?—l am, etc., • A Constant Subscriber.

April 21st, 1883. „ . • [We can assure our correspondent that his astonishment on reading ohr content* pprary’s report; was not greater than oar o'Wh. It is not for us to say how that report was compiled, but itmaythrow some light on the matter when we mention that though Major Atkinson did not say in Ashburton what the Mail makes him say, he did use the arguments’- referred to : down south, and'they were duly reported in the local papers. Perhaps the fact that the Treasurer sometimes varies his language was not taken into account; hence the slight mistake.— Ed. G.]
