[per press association.] Melancholy Accident. Napier, To-day. The eldest daughter of Mr R. P. Williams, sheep farmer, near West Clive, was found drowned yesterday evening. The ' young lady was missed at tea-time on Saturday, and not being found on the ' ‘ premises an extended search was made, and the neighbors communicated with. The 'search was continued all Sunday, ■ when the body was found in a deep pool at the back of the house. Serious Fire. The Exchange Hotel, at Havelock, 14 ■ mtlea from here, was totally destroyed by fire, last night. The building contained 23 rooms. It was insured for LI,OOO ; furniture, L 80 0; stock, L 220;0 0; all in the Union office. ‘ : , Tii e Napier Hospital. - - The statement of tho-Hospital accounts : shows',that since 1878 to the present time • ‘ L 9,20() has been subscribed by the public and contributed by the. local bodies, but ■ the total amount of subsidies received from the Government only reaches L 5,710 ■ during the same period. The s.s. Penguin Broken Down. New Plymouth, To-day. The s.s. Penguin has anchored at Stoney River, her machinery having broken down. The s.s. Hauraki, from Waitara, is on her way to render assistance. This will cause a delay in the arrival of. the outward ’Frisco mail at • Auckland. The Penguin has not been . communicated with yet, so - the extent of , the damage to her machinery is not - known. 1 Found Drowned. Wellington, To-day. The body of the man McMahon, who ‘'■had been missing since Monday last, was
. found this morning on the sea beach at c Kaiwarra. It is surmised that while search- .. ing for his child, which had wandered " away, he fell into the Hutt River, and -was drowned. ■ - Patal Accident. A lad named Francis Ward Pearce, aged 17, son of James Pearce, farmer, Pahautanui, was thrown from his horse yesterday morning and killed. • Immigration. ' The Government have received advice from the Agent-General in London of the ’ sailing of the ship Rangitikei, with 293 - immigrants for Auckland, and the ship Oxford, for Wellington, with 302 immigrants. The nominations forwarded by - the mail yesterday numbered 449 souls, or 396 J adults, for the following districts : Auckland, 94; Taranaki, 9; Hawke’s 'Bay, 19; Wellington, 62; Nelson, 24; Westland, 5 ; Marlborough, 3; Canterbury, 93; Otago, 103; Southland, 38. The amount of fees received was L 1,127. Bush Fire. By a bush fire at Greytown the residence of James Tweedale, a carpenter, was destroyed. The origin is attributed to children throwing matches in the scrub. ' The premises werp owned by Mr Bidwell; runholder. Tweedale. estimates his loss ■ at 1100. Indecent Assault, ..1.-. Ckkistchokch, To-day. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning . William Leake was committed for trial for an indecent assault on a girl five and a.half years r old, in the circus paddock opposite the Theatre Royal. Tie “Noiseless" Engine. Dunedin, To-day; The information against MrProudfoot, the tramway proprietor, for using “ noiseless ’’ engines was dismissed. The Sewing Machine Swindle. At the City Police Court,. Thomas Dobbie was committed for trial on two charges of stealing sewing machines.
