SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
Tinwald.
The annual meeting of the householders was held in the school on Monday night. The attendance was moderate. Mr Joseph Clark occupied the chair, and read the following report: found, on taking office, that the master had resigned. The first duty your Committee had to perform was to obtain the service of another, but the one obtained did not stop, and so for the time the school had to be closed, and to fill this vacancy the Committee had again to advertise, and the master appointed is the one now in charge, under whose care we feel sure the school will soon recover the time lost. Mrs Wake, the mistress, has attended to he’r aide of the school, and endeavoured to keep the scholars together under great difficulty, and the Committee take this opportunity of according to her their thanks for the manner in which she has worked f >r the good of the school. The Board of Education has given the Committee very little extra help financial!/, as owing to the changes in the teaching staff, the expenses of advertising, etc., have been exceptionally heavy, and these charges coming upon the Incidental Fund has completely absorbed our funds,' and the only supplementary allowance we could get was L 5, and as the Incidental is made up according to the attendance, and our school having been closed, caused a small average, and this was reduced from L9toL 63s 4d. The Committee during the last quarter have economised in every way, but find themselves still deficient, and trust this can be cleared off with the March quarter, as your Committee have pointed out all these matters to the Board, and expect they will supplement the amount so allow the new Committee to start with a clean balance-sheet.”—The report as read and the balance-sheet were then adopted, and a vote of thanks accorded to the late Committee.
The householders then proceeded to elect seven gentlemen, in accordance with the Educational Act, to be a Committee for the year 1883, with the following result :—Messrs Joseph Clark, R. Ennis, D. Tippets, A. Lawrence, R, McKenzie, F. S. Shearer, and J. Jones. At a meeting held immediately after, Mr Joseph Clark was elected chairman} and Mr A. Lawrence secretary.
Elgin. The annual meeting of householders of the Elgin district was held in the schoolroom on Monday, for the purpose of electing a School Committee Mr John Cochrane was voted to the chair, and read the minutes of the last annual meeting, which were confirmed. Ho then read the annual report as follows :—Mr W. J. King commenced duties as teacher in Elgin school on the 2nd March, and the Board of Education appointed Mrs King as sewing mistress from the 22nd of the same month, and had since appointed her as mistress of the school from the 2nd November. When Mr King took charge the attendance was low, but now there were 60 on the roll. Owing to the resignation of Mr J. S. Bruce as Chairman in April, Mr John Cochrane was elected Chairman for the remainder of the year, and Mr T. Trevurza was elected a member of the Committee from the 3rd of May. Mr Edge inspected the school on the 3rd of the present month, and although we have not as yet heard the result, your Committee have every reason to believe that it will prove satisfactory. In accordance with the Education Act, the accounts for the past year have been audited by Mr W. R. Boyle, and certified to as being correct. They give a balance at the end of the year in favor of the Committee of L 27 15s 6d. Teachers’ salaries and sundry small accounts since paid reduces the balance at the present time to L 6 16s. A concert was held in the schoolroom on the 29th November, which was very successful, the proceeds being Lll 12s 6d, which was further increased by donations from kind friends and the balance from the previous year to Ll 9 6s 3d ; also, two valuable books wore given as special prizes by Mrs Alfred Harri-on and Mr McLean Dunn. Ll 3 9s 3d was expended in books, treat, and sports ; also, by a lady in the district, LI 17s 6d in toys, etc., which were appreciated by the children. The Committee wish to place on record a vote of thanks to those ladies and gentlemen who so ably assisted in making the concert a success, and to those who so liberally contributed towards the children’s treat.” The report as read was adopted.
