Melbourne, Jan, 16. The claims of the medical men for compensation for services in the late smallpox ■care at Hamilton have been dealt with by the Board. Dr Wilson’s claim «f L 565 has been reduced to LIOO. Dr Browne’s from L2lO to LISO. Dr Plummer’s from L 167 10s to LI2O. The Creawick inquiry is still proceeding. Mr Stewart, Inspector of Mines, has-stated that all the precautions demanded by the law had been t ikon by the owners and managers of the New Australasian Mine, but it. seems pretty clear from the evidence that the plans were incorrect. The Police Commission have concluded their labors, and presented their report, which contains sweeping charges against the detective force in particular. The Prega, however, are of opinion that the report is not very reliable, as the Commission in all cases place great confidence on .'the evidence of criminals, much of which is untrustworthy and exaggerated. One point of the report, however, meets with general approval, namely, the undesirability of employing criminals in the detection of crime, unless when really necessary. Mr Jeremiah Dwyer died on Monday. He was a* well-known barrister, and at one time was a member of the Assembly. The threatened strike of bakers is causing a good deal of attention, but it is hoped that negotiations may avert the necessity of a strike. The assault at arms in the Town Hall was well attended, all the leading athletes ♦airing part. There is a good surplus for the Creawick fund. The heat has been very excessive the last few days. The registered heat in Bourke street has been 112 in the shade and 165 in the sun. ' • Sydney, Jan. 16. The defeat of Mr Copeland, the Minis-ter-of Works, by Mr Mitchell has caused some surprise. It is stated that he will probably stand for East Sydney if Mr McUhene chooses to sit for the Upper Hunter. The Marine Board has commenced an inquiry on the collision between the Kembla and the Bosedale. The evidence is conflicting regarding the action of the captain of the latter in not waiting to render assistance. The,inquiry has been adjourned. The National Shipwreck Society has granted L 327 to the widow of Captain ManU, drowned in the steamer New England., The Society has also decided to present Mr Lemaire, Chief Engineer of New England, and the crew of the schooner C. Walker with gold medals in recognition of their bravery.
