TELEGRAMS.

[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] A Close Pace. Auckland, To-day. Great interest was manifested here in a race between the Union Company’s s s. Manapouri and the mail steamer City of Sydney, which left here for Sydney last Tuesday evening. A special cablegram from a passenger to the Star shows that, reckoning the difference in time of departure from Auckland, the vessels made the voyage within five minutes of each other, both doing the distance in four days two hours ; or an average of a small fraction over thirteen miles an hour. A Publican Fined. Wellington, To-day. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Knigge, the proprietor of the Brunswick Hotel, was fined LlO and L2 costs on a charge of adulterating beer with sulphuric acid. From the evidence it appeared that the& was no wilful intention to adulterate, but that the jar in which the beer was sold had previously contained sulphuric acid. It is probable that a charge of Sunday trading will emanate from this case. The s s. St. Kilda. Gretmodth, To-day. The St. Kilda was towed in th s morning. The damage consists of the cr.ra-bustion-box having fallen in. It is expected that the repairs will occupy a fortnight. Serious Mishap. Christchurch, To-day. Joseph Welchman, employed at Mr Seed’s flax works at Southbrook, got his right arm entangled in the scutching mill this morning. The arm was torn completely off below the elbow. The unfortunate sufferer was conveyed to Rangiora, where ho was attended to by Drs Williams and Downes. The Fraser Scandal. The Christchurch Presbytery to-day found the Rev Charles Fraser guilty of the charges contained in the “ libel ’’ against him, and the Moderator formally deposed him from the office of the holy ministry. Accident. Dunedin, To-day. The engine-driver to the ten o’cl. ck up train to Oamaru, fell off the engine shortly after leaving Palmerston. He received a severe blow on the forehead, which rendered him insensible. It is supposed that he missed his footing when turning a sharp curve. The name of the driver is David Thompson.
