The Government have selected five independent gentlemen as a Board of Enquiry into the recent railway accident. .Lady Normanby’s health requiring change, the Governor has accepted the offer of Mr Wm. Taylor’s mansion, at Neelor, for two months, during the hot weather. The settling over the Champion Race was satisfactory. Mr Pearson was the largest winner, with L 1750. Two men who formed a Totalisator Club prior to the last Melbourne Gup have levanted with a lot of money. li> is believed they have gone to'one of the other colonies. A severe snowstorm occurred on the Australian Alps, at Harnetville, on last Sunday. Sydney, Jan. 4. Parliament met yesterday, and the new Secretary was presented to the Governor to-day. The Government are inviting tenders for the construction of the railway to unite the southern and northern lines, a distance of about twenty-nine miles. > The weather has been showery the past two days. At Grafton and Cheater it was raining in torrents; six inches had fallen in 36 hours, The weather is cool for the time of the year. Cleverly forged Bank of Australasia notes are in circulation. The revenue returns issued are very satisfactory.. They show an increase on the quarter of L 163,000, and on the year of L 704.000. Of the latter increase taxation gives L 133,000, railways L 368,000, pastoral leases L 123,000, and the amount at credit of the consolidated revenue fund at the close of the year Was L 3,888,000.
One hundred and thirty-one thousand fares were collected on the tramways on New Year’s Day. Concerning the death of the boy at Middle Harbor by collision of a boat and steamer, the jury considered the owner of the steamer responsible, for not having kept a proper look out. Brisbane, Jan. 4.
Hope Cooper, Attorney-General, has been appointed Northern Supremo Court Judge, in the place of Judge Shepherd, deceased.
0. E. Chubb has been appointed Attor-ney-General. The Premier and Lady Mcllwrailh have started on a visit to the Southern colonies.
