THE PHOENIX PARK MURDER.

Important Arrests, . ° [Peb San Francisco Mail.] [BY TELEGRAPH.] fl London, Deo. 18. Two important arrests were made in Dublin on the 14th December in connection with the murder of .Lord F. Cavendish and Mr Burke. A private investigation was held at the Castle. The arrested men are named Byrne (a painter) and n Hanlon (a letter-carrier). . One is identi- j fied as having been near the car. Another despatch says that the detectives behave they .have at length unravelled tiie Phoenix Park mystery. The police C 1 admit that in consequence of the recent n re-distribution of placards offering a re- £ ward for private information, and of c , arrests following -for Fenian outrages, a e number of informers, when they found u the police already.; knew ao rauch, were in- c . dined by fear to tell more. The police, by putting together various items of information, have got what they believe to foe a direct chain of information. The 0 evidence began to thicken about the time f, of the assault upon Dennis Field. That p affair was so similar in its circumstances ’ to the Phoenix Park crime that at first it was hoped that it would give a clue to the latter, Mr Jenkinson, who directs p ihe Criminal Investigation Department, ii Mr Curran, Queen’s Counsel, and Mr j Mallow, .Superintendent of the Detective Force, had been engaged for a fortnight Jrevious in a private enquiry. Hanlon, J ne of the suspects, is 28 years old, small C in stature. The other prisoner, Brady, S is 36 years; tall, stout, and robust. They I Were confronted at the Castle on the day J of their arrest, with several persons who, I at the inquest over the remains of Lord j Frederick Cavendish, testified that they i had seen the Phoenix Park assassins drive t fo'way. Mr Curran, however, did not deem 1 their identification <f Brady and Han- t Ifon sufficient, but the prisoners were de- t tained in order that they might a have an opportunity to see them. I it is thought that further arrests, will be ] Baade in connection with the murders. At ] the enquiry on the 16th December one of ] the witnesses was so astonished at the I f knowledge possessed by the police that he \ fainted on quitting the room. The man, < behind whose house were found the knives < •Opposed to have been used in the mur- £ ; der, was examined on the 16th. Two of i the knives have blood stains on them. < The police believe they know the driver of i the oar that conveyed the murderers to f and from the Park. They think he also' i drove the car on which Field’s assailants j rode. I - The latest nows received (Dublin, i December 17th) concerning the Phoenix i Park investigation is to the effect that the Lord Lieutenant, has issued three new proclamations, offering rewards for information, viz.:— L 6,000 far information leading,to the.conviction of the assassins, and the authorities have promised to insure that the names of the informants will not be divulged ; 110,000 to any accomplice in the crime, not the actual murderer, - who will . give information leading to the conviction of the actual murderers or accomplices, and LSOO for ’ information leading to the identification qf any accomplice, or of the horse and car * op which the assassins rode, or of the assassins’ clothes or weapons. These proclamations, although only issued on the evening of the 6tb December, are dated Hevember 11th. The police believe they have sufficient evidence to sustain a charge of conspiracy, against the persons - .now in custody on suspicion. , —————
