Chester on the 13th, rejected the idea of a protectorate for Egypt. England, he said, ought not to remain in that country longer than was absolutely necessary itek restore order. Referring to the attitude of France towards Madagascar, the,, speaker said—“lf amicable mediation; would prevent an invasion of Madagascar, w« ought to offer our services ; but if, as appears probable, the dispute. is only a pretext for the annexation ■ of $ part of the island, we ought to from mediating.” ’ ‘ A Madagascar envoy had an interview with the Queen at Windsor on the 12th.’ T - > Following Lord Salisbury in Scotland, Mr W. E. Forster delivered a speechon the 16th, strikingly in contrast to. Lord. The following batch of failures is reported in England . —Morrison and Co., Brighton, Ferry and Morris, Llanginneck, tin plate workers, for L 150,000 and L 140.000 respectively. They were involved in the downfall of Biddulph, Jevons, and Co., Liverpool. Forester and Go., tin plate workers, L 50,000; Cambria Tin Plate Society and Red Book Tin Plate Company, the liabilities being large, have also failed.

Lord Derby, in a Manchester speechoh December 13th, said his personal Jopinion was that some millions spent in prompt* ing emigration from Ireland would be 3 profitable expenditure. He believed that in a few years, despite the Land Acts, sma'l tenants in Ireland would be just as dependent as ever on the forbearance of landlords. Thus, the old difficulty would recur. But he thought the Government should abstain from encouraging further proposals for legislation in regard to Irish land. The Government should refuse to listen for an hour to the claim for Irish nationality in whatever disguise it presented. An Irish Parliament would lead to separation as certain as two and two make four. If we do not want this to become a practical question, he said we must be careful to avoid giving vague pledges, which will be construed as moaning more than they do. 'The’Duke of Edinburgh has been appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Marines. Olidwick and Sons, woollen factors, of Leeds, have failed for L 70,000. A train in the North of Scotland from McDuff, fell through a bridge at Figvie, Aberdeenshire. Fourteen persons wore killed and many injured. Oleveden Hall, near Bristol, was burnt down. The library, one of the most valuable in England, was partially destroyed. The Albert Mills, Dewsbury, and the London and Northwestern Car Factory, Wolverton, were burned. The loss was LIOO.OOO. The remaining four prisoners for the Joyce murders threw themselves on the clemency of the Crown, and asked fbr life. They wore sentenced to death, but five of the sentences have since been commuted to penal servitude. San Fkancisco, Dec. 18. A consignment of twenty-two ostriches reached San Francisco from Capetown on the 14th. They will be placed on an 800racre ranehe near the border of San | Francisco county. The general opinion is that Mrs Labouchere is piqued at the attention paid to Mrs Langtry, of , which she has received-a scant share.
