by the publication of-a telegram fr m the Colonial Secretary, apparently in reply to Dr Spencer, who has assumed ohe position of Chairman of the Hospital Commit roe. In accordance with a resol u ion passed by the Committee in 1868, and approved by the then Government, the Committee consists of ten members, two elected by the Hawke’s Bay Council, two by the borough Council, one by the Wairoa Council, four by the subscribers to the Hospital, and the Mayor of Napier ex officio■ The Hon. T. Dick’s telegram, apparently in accordance with suggestions made by Dr Spencer, authorises two Committeemen to be elected, one by the subscribers, and one by Hawke’s Bay. Wairoa and the Boroujh are to be dis ranchisecl. The election comes off to-morrow. At the request of numerous subscribers, Mr Sutton, M.H.R., addressed a strongly worded telegram to the Hon. T. Dick, repudiating Dr Spencer’s action, and pointing out that he had not been authorised by the Committee to make such secret arrangements. The Borough Council voted L2OO to the Hospital and will decline to be unrepresented on the Committee. The Rainfall. The rainfall registered in Napier during 1882, was thirty-seven inches. Death by Drowning. Hawera, To-day. A drowning accident occurred at Manutohi yesterday. A boy named King, who was bathing in the dam, got out of his depth. The father went to save him and was drowned also. The bodies were recovered. A Sudden DeathDunedin, To-day. James Rodgers, station-master at Burnside, died suddenly last night. The Fapakaio Murder Case. e The Papakaio murder case is fixed for the 22nd inst. Massey Still in Gaol. Massey is still unable to find bail. It is understood that the police have found some important documentary evidence at his house. Death of a Maori Chief. Christchurch, To-day. Arapatu Koti, the Maori chief of the pah near Kaiapoi, died last evening at the advanced age of 98. The Maoris are now making preparations for holding a grand tangi. "
