GENERAL CHANZY.
In our cablegrams in Saturday’s issue, the ,death was announced of “General Chagy.” This was a mistake, the officer who has just died being General one of the moat renowned of French soldiers and the most successful com* mander on the side of the vaaquished in the Franco-Prussian War. The following biography is from “Men ef, the timetr- “ Chanzy, Antoine Eugene Alfred, Iras born at Nonart, a little Tillage in the Ardennes, Maach 18, 1823, and first served in the navy, as, ,an (novice) on board the Neptune, m which capacity he accompanied the squadron pf Admiral do Lalande in the East, in 1839 and 1840. On his return to he quitted the navy in order to prepare .hmiself for the Ecole Militaire, into which he was admitted oh October ly iIB4H £id which he left as sub-lieutenant of Zouaftas, October 1, 1843. He served -in Algeria, and took part in all the expeditions in that colony. He K was promoted to bo lieutenant August 1, -1849, ' captaih Hu 1852, and major in 18561- In 1869, at his earnest. request, he obtained permission to make the Italian campaign. Advanopd to the rank of lieutenant-colonel in 1860, he ’made the campaign in Syria, as chief of -the political crajinet of General Beaufort d’Hautprfil. He became colonel in the month of May, 1864, and conducted his regiment back to Algeria, where he commanded at one time the columns were ordered to suppress the and at another the subdivisions* at' BelAbb&a and Tlemsen. On November 34, 1868, he became a general of brigade. Summoned from Tlemsen to Fra pop on the outbreak of the Franco-Pruasian he-was nominated general of division October 21, 1870; Oommander-in-Ghief of the 16 th Corps on the sth of thetJellowing month ; and Commander-in-chief of the 2nd Army of the Loire on December 6. The moat trustworthy detail Kief this, the most remarkable period of his eventful career, are given in a work published by General Chanzy at Paris in 1871, under the title of ‘La Deuxihfee Amide de la Loire.’ Daring the Cotamune he was arrested in Paris, and.,narrowly escaped the fa l e which befel Generals Lecomte and Cldment Thomfea. Elected a member of the National Assembly for the Department of. t the Ardennes, he cast in his lot with:4£e Left Centre party, of which he, waa elected President May 10, 1872-. i On September 1, 1872, he waa appointed Commander-in-chief of the 7th Amy Corps at Tours, and on June 11, 1873, Governor-General of Algeria- Genwfcl Chanzy was made a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor December 2, 1870; and was decorated with the /military medal February 13, 1872. On December->lO, 875, he was elected a Senator for I if 6: by 345 votes. He was presented with the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor "in August, 1878. ” - ’ \ '*■ T
