[PEB PBKSB ASSOCIATION.] A Burning Question. New Plymouth, To-day. The question of the Government attempting to make over a reserve within the limits of the Borough (about 50 acres in extent) to the Taranaki Jockey Club, against the wishes of the Borough Council, is again agitating the public. A meeting was held by the Club on Wednesday, (when a resol utionn was passed by which the Club agreed to accept the lease for forty-two years at a rental of L 75 per annum, free of rates. The Borough Council met last evening when the piatter was again discussed, and the following resolution passed “ That the Council use every legitimate means in its power to prevent the diversion of the reserve now used as a racecourse from the uses for which it wps originally granted to the Superintendent of the Province, namely, the improvements of the streets and town of New Plymouth, and that the Government be furnished with a copy of this resolution, with a request that the terms
of the new grant be in keeping with criminal grant.” Shipping. Dunedin, To-d^y. The ship Mennock, Captain Murray, 92 days from London, ha arrived. A Peculiar Larceny. A peculiar larceny case came before the City Court this morning. Kdward Gilbert was charged with stealing a quantity of silk. Mrs Russell, the prosecutrix, whose house was burnt down on Monday, alleged she gave the silk to Gilbert to mind. Accused said he had been led into the affair by one of the witnesses, and was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. On leaving the dock Gilbert told this witness she had better clear out of the country before he came out.
