Many of them expressing the opinion that darkness had come on them too soon. Owing to the inclemency of the weather during the first part of the week, it was not generally known that the school treat would take place on Friday, otherwise a much greater number would have been in attendance. The pupils themselves took a considerable interest in the preparations. Among the special prizes, one from Mr H. M. Jones, for recitation was omitted in our yesterday’s report. Mr Dempsey wishes us to convey the thanks of the Committee and himself to Dr Ross, for the use of his paddock ; to Mr Harris, for the box of gooseberries sent ; Mr Revans, for a bag of oranges ; Mr Patching, for the use of his TTnion Jack ; Mr Parkin, for the gymnastic apparatus, flag-polos, etc., which he supplied ; the Ashburton United Temperance Society, for a box of toys ; the drapers in town who supplied cloth for flags, and to those parents and friends who assisted at yesterday’s treat.
