MOUNT HUTT ROAD BOARD.
The above Board met on Thursday the 14th inst. Present —Messrs Cameron, McMillan, Alington, Orr, and the Chairman, Mr Julian Jackson. —The Overseer’s report was read, and it was resolved to give the contractor for shingling Barker’s road notice to push on with the work, so as to get the contract completed by the specified time. —Mr John Mann interviewed the Board in reference to a right-of-way through the late Mr Anderson’s property. It appeared that as this was a private affair between Mr McMillan and Messrs McKerrow and Mann, the Board declined to interfere.—The Chairman informed the meeting that Mr McMillan and himself had gone over the proposed stormwater drainage line from Methven to Hfighbank with Mr Baxter, who would hand in his report to the County Council at their next meeting.—Tenders were opened for the formation of fbur miles of the Chertsay road, and 120 chains of the Lower Boundary road. Only two tenders were sent in ; one was informal, and the other considered too high.—Mr E. Chapman, of Drayton, wrote, complaining of the stock that was allowed to stray about the roads, and asked the Board to take the necessary steps to compel the owners to keep the stock on their own property. —lt was resolved to advertise for written applications from persons willing to act as ranger, applications to be sent in by next meeting,—Mr R. M. Morten wrote, enclosing a cheque for land in road closed through Mr Anderson’s property. It was resolved to return Mr Morton’s cheque to him, as the Board did not recognise him in the matter. The County Council wrote, informing the Board that the cost of painting the posts at the ends of culverts and the cost of keeping the fords in order would be paid by the Council. A communication was freceived from the County Council, asking the Board to recommend a poundkeeper for the next year. It was resolved to advertise for a suitable person, the application to be in by Saturday the 23cd inst., the Chairman to select one and inform the Council of his selection.— A letter was read from Mr Back, traffic manager, in reply to a letter from the Board asking to have a read opened through the railway yard at Methven, stating that asasimilarapplication had been made by the Rakaia and Ashburton Forks Railway Company and refused, he could not grant the application.—A letter was read from M< E. G. Wright, Chairman of the Rangitata Road Board, requesting the Board to agree with them in recommending the amalgamation of the several road boards in tho County, the whole to be worked under the County Council, as they consider it would be more economical. After carefully considering Mr Wright’s letter the Board were unanimous in condemning his proposal as unworkable, and passed the following resolution—- “ That this Board does not see tho advantage of merging the seven Boards into one, u jder the County Council, as proposedby the Rangitata Road Board, and coil-: aiders tho present system of local government far more satisfactory a copy of the resolution to bs forwarded to the Rangitata Road Board.—A letter was read from Mr. John (-’rigg upon the proposed amalgamation of the several districts by the Rangitata Road Board, giving the Longbeach Board’s views upon the matter, and enclosing the Longbeach Board's reply to Mr Wright. It was resolved to write to Mr Grigg, and th -nk him for his letter, and to forward him a copy of thei resolution passed by this Board.—After passing accounts to the amount of LOO 2a Id, the Board adjourned till January 11th 1833.
