ANNIVERSARY DAY HOLIDAY.
■ To the Editor.
Sir, —As I notice by the papers that Christchurch, Timaru, arid every town ip the old Canterbury Province, together with the Government, have proclaimed to-morrow, the 16th, a holiday, and that the railway also have recognised it as such by their advertisements, can you tall me why Ashburton stands alone, and asserts to herself the right to ignore a hitherto recognised holiday? A rumor has reached me that some of our wiseacres think that because Anniversary Day falls once in seven years on a Saturday, and that tomorrow, that now is the time to make a stand and stamp out such a holiday. I hope, if such is the case, they will also stamp out the 26th, another recognised holiday. —I am., etc.. Enquirer.
