At a meeting, at which fully 500 persons were present, held at the Town Hall last evening, resolutions were unanimously passed requiring the abolition of patronage in appointments made to Government departments. The Hawthorne Railway Accident. 6 The general traffic manager of Victorian railways (Mr J. - Anderson) has issued a report regarding the Hawthorne railway collision, in which he blames the driver and guard of the express for the catastrophe. Election Excitement. Sydney Yesterday. Sir Henry Parkes has gone to Illawara to assist the Hon. James Watson, the Colonial Treasurer, in his contest for that seat. The Australian Cricketers commenced a match yesterday against fifteen of South Australia, and at the close of the day’s play the scores stood as follows : Fifteen, first innings, 117; Australians, one wicket for 44. In the first innings of the Australian team yesterday, Massie was bowled for 2, Bannerman and Murdoch are not out with respectively 28 and x 6 to their credit. The weather was fine during the day.
Sydney, To-day. The English Cricketers commenced a match yesterday against Eighteen of Newcastle. When the stumps were drawn the home team were all out.for 67, and the Englishmen had four wickets down for 130.
In the Newcastle match the scores of the Englishmen at the close of yesterday’s play stood as follows ;—Hon. Ivo Bligh, stumped, 22 ; Mr Barlow, not out, 34 ; Mr Leslie, c, 51; Mr C. T. Studd, o; Mr Steel, not out, 5; total for four wickets, 130. The weather was very fine during the day.
