CETEWAYO AND THE TEETOTALLERS.
Cetewayo received at his residence in London a deputation from the National Temperance League, whose object was to urge upon the Zulu monarch the desirability of discouraging the use of intoxicants in Zululand. Cetewayo, speaking through his interpreter, replied that as a nation his people were abstemious, and were not accustomed to partake of spirituous liquors. The beer which they used, and which was actually a food, was like gruel, and not like intoxicants, which were death. There was an order or proclamation issued tjy him that spirits should not be introduced or allowed to enter his country, and t he proclamation would certainly be made on his return. I think, however, added Cetewayo, that the right place to shut the door is the side from which the spirits come. It is no good shutting the door on my side, for I have no distilleries, and I think the proper way would be for you to tell the Government to assist my placing restrictions upon the introduction of spiritiouS liquors into my country, because border people may transgress and disregard the law without my knowledge. Really, the sable ruler added, the proper places of restriction are at the boundaries of ray territory. The deputation thanked the monarch, and withdrew. >
