TEA MEETING AT NEWLANDS.

The anniversary of Newlands Methodist Church was celebrated on Sunday, December 31st, when two very impressive sermons were preached by Mrs Holder, of Christchurch. The congregations were large, and the collections were good. The usual tea meeting took place last evening, tables being given by Mesdarnes Lill, Lloyd, Robinson, Aston,Moore, Nixon, and a splendid table by the bachelors. About 200 were present and partook of the good things prepared. At the after meeting Mr John VV. Maidens took the chair. He delivered an excellent address. He was Maidens by name, and this was his maiden speech. He had been a“sociated for many years with the Primitive Methodist Church, and during that time had occupied many positions, but he had never got so high as chairman before. It was to be hoped that the anniversary would bo a good one, both spiritually and otherwise. The building required painting, and he was afraid the ladies would have to do it. (Laughter). Newlands ladies were splendid workers, and now was the time, for harvest would soon be here. The Rev. J. Nixon then addressed the meeting. He reviewed the past year’s work, and regretted that more had not bean accomplished. Throe things wore needed in the church, one, personal piety, two, more witnessing for Cod, three, more Holy Ghost power. He apologised for the absence of the Revs, Standage and Beattie, and referred to the pleasure it gave him to see the Rev. E. A. Scott present. The Rev. E. A. Scott was the next speiker. He was received with great applause. He reciprocated Mr Nixon’s kindly words, and humorously remarked that he regarded them all as his parishioners. His address, which was a good one, was listened to with great attention throughout. Mrs Holder spoke on individual effort, and pointed out the need for Christians walking uprightly. This lady has a calm and pleasing delivery, and her speech was very appropriate. Spirited addresses were also given by Messrs Buchanan and Leadley. Mr Buchanan spoke on “ Hope,” and Mr Leadley on “ Progress.” During the evening, Mrs Nixon and Mrs Taylor rendered solos with great taste and expression. A vote of thanks to the ladies by Mr Lloyd, secondo by Mr Lill, was carried by acclamation, and a similar vote to Mrs Holder and the chairman, brought the boat meeting ever hold at Newlands to a close. The total amount realised is over L2O.
