An Elephant Stouy. —An anecdote is related by Mr Barnum as illustrative of the axiom that drinking is a habit that grows :—“ winter t\vo of my elephants be an shaking with chills one morning ; the keeper ran down into the village and got six gallons of whiskey. Hastily returning, throe gallons were given to each elephant. Fortunately it cured them. They liked the artificial warmth it superinduced. Next morning when the keener came to them he found both elephants shaking with might and main. * iNoyou don’t,’ he shouted, ‘you are well enough to-day,’ and they stopped shaking. ” Of course those only are ex- i pected to believe this who want to.
