MOUNT HUTT ROAD BOARD.

The above Board met on Thursday last. Present—Messrs Alington, Cameron, and the Chairman (Mr Julian Jackson). The Overseer’s report was read and considered. It was resolved to send a copy of that portion of the report relating to the storm-water having been diverted from its natural course, with the name of the person who had interfered bj blocking the course, to the County Council, and ask them to deal with the matter.—lt was also resolved to put a notice in each paper circulating in the district informing owners of property where gorsc is spreading from their fences that unless they grub out the gorse immediately they will be liable to be proceeded against under section 98 of the Public Works Act, 1876. —A letter was read from Mr John Grigg, refusing to form the streets in the township laid out by him in Methvon, and stating his reason, namely, that he had sold all the sections. The Clerk was instructed to send a copy of Mr Grigg's letter to the School Committee, as they had applied to the Board to have the streets formed. From Mr James Johnston, of Somerton, and several other residents in that locality, requesting the Board to form the remainder of the Chertsey road. The Board decided to form four miles of the road, from Mitcham to Barrhill road; also to form the remainder of the Boundary road. Tenders to be called for the next meeting.—The Chairman stated that he sent a telegram to Mr J. M. Ritchie, of Dunedin, also a copy of the telegram to {

Mr George King, of Christchurch, withdrawing from sale the land in road that had been closed through the late Mr Henderson’s property, which had been, » under offer for several months and not* 1 accepted. A telegram was read from ! Mr i Ritchie, stating that he thought time was of no moment, and that he intended ac-i -; copting the land. A letter from Mr King was read asking the Board to still adhere to their offer. Chairman’s action approved of. The Clerk was instructed to write to Mr Ritchie and Mr King informing them of the Board’s decision.—Mr T. Dowling wrote regretting that he was unable'to open up the roads proposed to bo opened up by him, as the Chief. Surveyor had refused to certify a plan unless a survey had been made of the roads proposed to be opened. Mr Dowling stated that he had made arrangements for the survey to be made, and would communicate with the Board as soon as the survey was completed. It was resolved that Mr Dowling be requested to give immediate attention to the Board’s request, and to either place gates on the line of roads or else remove within seven days all obstructions from public roads through the Highbank estate, failing which he should bo considered liable to an action at law for obstructing public roads.—From the County Council, informing the Board that the Council’s Engineer would inspect the line of drainage from Methven to Highbank, apd report upon it. Resolved that Mr McMillan and the Chairman of the Board meet Mr Baxter, and confer with him upon tho proposed scheme of storm water drainage. From the same, requesting the Board to see that tho different crossings over the races were kept in order, and the posts on which were the notices to be. kepi either whitewashed or sized. It was resolved to write and ask the Council who was to boar the ccst of the work ; also, to ask tho Council who was liable in case of accidents through the contractors for the water-races opening up a narrow ditch across the roads, and leaving them in this dangerous state.— From the County Council re the destruction of small birds. It was resolved to co-operate with the Council as requested. The Board considered that lOd per hundred for either eggs or heads of birds too little, and decided to supplement it by 2d per 100, and to allow the Clerk to certify to the quantity and make the payments for either the birds’ heads or eggs, to be delivered from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday evenings, at the office. —From Mr Vincent Pyke, informing the Board that he was preparing a handbook of local government law, and offering to supply the Board with a copy. The Chairman stated that he had ordered one, and his action was approved of.—From the secretary of the Rakaia and Ashburton Forks Railway Company, informing the Board that they were not in a position at present to hand over the land beside the line for the purpose of opening up the road. It was resolved to write to the traffic manager and request him to provide access through the railway yard at Methven.—Messrs Alington, Henderson, and Friedlander Bros, wrote signifying their willingness to put a the race inside their fences, as suggested by the Board, but as the majority of the property owners having land beside this race had not replied to the Board’s suggestion, it was resolved to write to the County Council, and request them to take steps to remove the race from tho road. After passing accounts to the amount of LllO 13s the Board adjourned till December 14th.
