North, To-day. Mr Dalrymplc, formerly inember in the Otago Provincial' Council, ‘died at Awahuri, on Saturday, aged 83. The Capital Sentence Commuted* Wellington, To-day. At a meeting of the Executive Council thia morning the case of Antonio Gosehnell, recently found guilty and sentenced to death for in order near Normanby (Taranaki), was Considered, and it was decided to commute the sentence to penal servitude for life. The Aurora. -The aurora was very, brilliant last night. Smart Shock of Earthquake. ( ’ Kaikoura, To-day. A smart shock of earthquake was experienced here yesterday evening at nine o’clock,, and continued several seconds, at first the shock was slight and the direction undecided, but as it increased in violence it was distinctively observed to travel east and west. Later a brilliant aurora was observed. Death of a “ Canterbury Pilgrim.” Christchurch, To-day. Dr Watkins, a very old and well-known colonist, died at Akaroa this morning, at the age of 91. The deceased gentleman, who had been in feeble health for some time past, was the oldest member of the College of Surgeons, and likewise the oldest medical practitioner in the colony. He was one of the original Canterbury “ Pilgrims,” having arrived here in the barque Creasy, the last-comer of the famous first four ships.' ‘ Without Opposition.
