Despatches from London, dated Qctobe/, 1 8,th says The t ,.cogisf n is the talk scientific,Circles at present. It is being regarded with considerable apprehension. Richard A. Proctor, who denied that it was the comet of 1843 and 1880, now finds that he has made a mistake in his calculations, and so he has withdrawn his statement. More cautious astronomers than he have no doubt of the identity of the comet, and believe it will return at latest in October, 1883, and will then fall into the sun, with results that will dispense with the future publication of the newspapers of the world. It is said this is the opinion of the most eminent identities of the day, C. Piazzi Smith, the clever astronomer of the Royal Society of Scotland, in particular having made no secret of his belief that the end of the world is at hand.
