0.J.0. SPRING MEETING. [by telegraph.] First Day — Tuesday, November, 7. Racecourse, 3.50 p.m. The Metropolitan Race Meeting commenced to-day. The weather was excellent, and the attendance the Orgeat ever

known on the first day of the meeting for many years. The fpllowing are the results:— ' Free Handicap of 100 sovs. One mile. Mr Proudfoot’s Sir Modred, 9st 2lb (H. Thompson) 1 Mr Bates’ Hilda,Bst 2lb ... (Wattie) 2 Messrs Mason and Vallance’s Siesta, 7st 91b (G. ‘Williams) 3 Betting 5 to 2 on the field, Sir Modred being the favorite. Natator, Matakau, and Legerdemain also ran* All got away well together, Natator being the first to show .in front, with Sir Modred second, and Hilda third. Rounding the bottom turn Natator fell back beaten, and in the straight Sir Modred came away, and won easily. Time—lmin

A capital start was effected, Nonsense and Cheviot being the first away. Bounding the turn Cheviot went to the front, and shortly after Minerva joined Nonsense, but at the stand fell away again, and coming up the straight Leos ran into third place. The favorite led throughout, and won by two lengths, Nonsense second, and Leos a fair third. Time—2mins. 45iaecs. 0. JO. Handicap of 500 sovs. 2 miles. Mr H. Betting—s to 2 against Welcome Jack, 4 to 1 against Lady Emma and Turquoise, 5 to 1 against Vanguard and Salvage. Welcome Jack got much the best of a bad start, followed by Turquoise and Lady Emma. Passing the stand The Poet and Lady Emma joined Turquoise, Bundoora, Emir Bay, and King Quail being last. After going three-quarters of a mile The Poet collared Welcome Jack, the rest being in a ruck behind. Opposite the stand Vanguard took the lead with The Poet second, and Welcome Jack third. Rounding the bottom turn Welcome Jack came again, and Bundoora also went up, and after a rattling race down the straight Welcome Jack won by about a length, Bundoora second, and Vanguard a good third. Time—3min 34scc. Welcome Stakes of 200 so vs. Four furlongs. Hon. W. Ro’ inson’s Oadeis (Derriti) 1 MrCutts’ Water Nymph (T. Thompson) 2 Messrs Mason and Vallance’s Helena (Williams) 3 ; Won easily.
