LANCASTER PARK 0.0. v. ASHBURTON 0.0.

Following an adjournment for the lunch yesterday, which was laid in the pavillion by Mr Power, of the Royal Hotel, the Lancaster Park team took their innings. The Hon. E, 0. SteVens, and A. C. Wilson were the first to face the bowling of A. Pooka and Simpson. The veteran Mr Stevens played a very steady game, but a “ trimmer ” from Simpson displaced his bails. He made only six, and the hearts of the Ashburton men began to beat higher at seeing him retire so soon. M> W. P. Reeves took his place at the bat, and Pixley was put on to bowl at the north end. Runs now came apace, until Reeves let a ball go off his bat, and was beauti fully caught by Castelli. His innings was altogether a pretty lively one, and at iti close 44 were added to the score, or nearly half the Ashburton total. Wilding joined Wilson, and for some time these twt players had it all their own wayj Twoi and threes were now the order of the day and both 'players being well set, it was ex pected that they would remain at the wickets for the whole afternoon. Castelli was put on as change bowler at the south end, but with little result. A* last a splendid ball from Pixley took Wilding’s leg stump, and he ret.red after playing a splendid innings for 42 runs. The Lancaster Park score now stood at 83 for the loss of three w’okets. A. Reeves joined his brother, and in the second over made a splendid hit for 4. The next ball from Pixley took his off stump. Ootterill played well atid carefully, and added 8 runs as his contribution, but, unfortunately, in trying to cut one off Simpson, allowed his leg to int rfe-'e, and had to retire., W. D. Reeves then joined his brother, and in a very short time, through very good play put together 14, and kept his bat to the finish. Messrs Roa.h, Murray- Aynaley, Bruges, and Dr flacon were* afterwards quickly disposed ot, only adding 23 to the total. Denshire, at slip was particularly. good, and, .made some splendid catches. Simpson and Pixley bowled remarkably well, and were in no way inferior in this respect to the visitors. The fielding on the part of some of the Ashburton team was, however, somewhat loose and erratic. Grant, as wicket-keeper, did good service, and Cox at square-leg was invaluable. Altogether the visitors did-not have such an easy win of it as they had anticipated, and we think that the following scores of the Ashburton men’s seoond innings, so far as it went, bespoke a different result from the first innings. With practice, we have every reason to predict a successful season for our Club, and the players of yesterday have to be on making such a respectable stand against the crack players of the Lancaster Park Club. The following are the concluding scores:—
