The Rakaia men went to bat at nearly four o’clock, but failed to make any stand against the Ashburton bowling. Hussey played a very good innings, but only added 7 runs as his contribution, the total for the first innings of the Rakaia being only 28 runs. Simpson bowled well, and succeeded in taking 3 wickets for three successive balls in one over, thus perform* ing the hat trick. Shury also had similar luck in the second innings, and had the hat trick placed to his credit. Both players were rewarded in the customary way. The second innings of the visitors

ASHBURTON 0.0. i The first important match of the season was played to-day on the Domain ground, between the above clubs. The pitch was very dry, but played better than yesterday, the matting being lightly laid. The Ashburton club having won the tons elected to go in first, and Caatelli and A. Fooks faced the bowling of Wilding and Roach. Caatelli played very carefully, and put together 7 rune in a short time, but unfortunately put hia leg in front Of the wicket and had to retire. Careful play resulted for some littfetiMei. I .Fooks and Pixley retired when the score ffood ’ at 15. Simpson and Gifkina played very well for Ashburton, and the latter made the very creditable score of 26. Both these players showed good form, and their batting was much admired. The bowlers were frequently changed, and runs came 3 in fairly well, until 78 was, reached, when iQifkiris-Was clean ■ bowled by ball from Hacon.
