COUNTY COUNCIL.

[The following business was transacted by the above body after we went to press yesterday :— j Mr T. T. Jackson, Chairman Methven Library Committee, wrote urging the Council to reconsider its decision re grant in aid of Library. The Council could not accede to the request. It was resolved that the annual and ordinary monthly meetings should be held together on the 29th instant. It was resolved to advertise for a supply of dog collars for 1883. Mr Wright moved, Mr Lambie seconded, and it was carried—“ That the plans and estimates of the cost of a combined road and railway bridge over the Rakaia at Dobbin’s Ford be forwarded to the Minister for Public Works, with an application for the amount requisite for t m construction of the said bridge.” Mr Wright further moved —“ That the Selwyn County Council be Asked whether they will take the necessary steps under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act, to secure the payment of a portion of the one-fourth cost of the proposed bridge, estimated to cost L 36,540; also that they be asked to state whether they will contribute in equal proportion with the Ashburton Council.”—Carried.

Mr Siloock, contractor, wrote enclosing account for extra work done. Mr Baxter endorsed the letter “I can eee no reason for adding to the amount paid to Mr Silcock,” and stated his grounds for thinking so.—The Council declined. Tenders for Mount Somers water supply were opened, and that of Messrs Furneaux and Dunlop was accepted for the two contract races and fords, at L 95 12s lOd.

Mr John Marshman, Crown Lands office, wrote, stating that Government would grant L2OO for the purpose of planting in Ashburton if the Council expended for that purpose a similar, amount. It was resolved to make applies'ion for the amount. It was resolved that the sum of L 250 be applied for from the South Rakaia Road Board (which had been granted), and that the Board be informed - that there is a complaint that the fords are not in order. It was resolved to apply to the Mount Hutt Road Board for a poundkeoper at the expiration of the present lease of the Methven pound. It was suggested that the Planting Committee should get the ploughing done round plantation block of 25ft. A license to slaughter cattle was granted to Messrs vt’ilkiu and Carter.

The Council then adjourned to Nor. 29th.
