The City of New York, with the October English mails, left San Francisco for - Auckland on the,22nd ult. The Zealandia, with the October; colonial mails, arrived at San Francisco from Auckland on the 29th ult, four days earlier than the time-table date.. An Important FindReefton, To-day. Gassier and party, alluvial miners at Maraia, within the route of the proposed Bast and West Coast railway, reports the discovery of a* quartz reef forty miles from Reefton in the direction of Christchurch, and near Cannibal gorge. They obtained fine gold in all of the reefs, and near another lode found a face of quartz with sdwta of gold in it. The reef ,is four feet thick. They will take up tools from here to cross-cut the reef and test. The formation of the country is said to he the sime as at Reefton. The miners also report the existence of several coal seams in the same locality. Hotel Burned- ■' A small way-side hotel near. Reefton was burnt down yesterday afternoon. The {lace is fully covered by the insurance of .400 in the Imperial office. The Dunedin Prize Firing Competition. Dunedin, To-day. The shooting opens at nine to-morrow morning with the Nelson match. There are 340 competitors here. It is expected tbatthefinal competition for the championship will take place on Tuesday afternoon. . Competitors complain of the range, there being a background of white sand. There is eveiy appearance of fine weather. The Accident to the Rotomahana. Mr Hackworth held a formal enquiry yesterday into the grounding of the Rotomafaana. All the evidence went to show the - accident was caused by the strength of the wind and tide, which were unusually strong, and were not sufficiently allowed for. A Smart Shock. Two shocks of earthquake were experienced at Queenstown tfaiii morning. • The second one was the most violent ever felt in the district, and lasted over twenty seconds. The damage was confined to the breakage of glass. Taking WellOver 20,000 shares in excess of the number to he allotted are applied for in the Equitable Insurance Association.' The share list will be kept open till Monday in the principal towns.
