Gassier and party, alluvial miners at Maraia, within the route of the proposed Bast and West Coast railway, reports the discovery of a* quartz reef forty miles from Reefton in the direction of Christchurch, and near Cannibal gorge. They obtained fine gold in all of the reefs, and near another lode found a face of quartz with sdwta of gold in it. The reef ,is four feet thick. They will take up tools from here to cross-cut the reef and test. The formation of the country is said to he the sime as at Reefton. The miners also report the existence of several coal seams in the same locality. Hotel Burned- ■' A small way-side hotel near. Reefton was burnt down yesterday afternoon. Two shocks of earthquake were experienced at Queenstown tfaiii morning. • The second one was the most violent ever felt in the district, and lasted over twenty seconds. The damage was confined to the breakage of glass. Taking WellOver 20,000 shares in excess of the number to he allotted are applied for in the Equitable Insurance Association.'
