Sweet William, Santa Claus, Lord Lisgar, Odd Trick, Jessie, Sting, Sylvanus, Flying Jib, Mistaken, Anglesey, King of the Yale, Standard Bearer, Brunette, and Little Jack, also ran. Betting—Sweet William was a strong favorite at 6 to 2, Mistaken 5 to 1, Little Jack 8 to 1, Odd Trick 100 to 8, Stockwell IQO to 7, Sting 100 to 6, and the same about King bf the Yale ; Darebin, The Assyrian, Savanaka, Cunmulla, and Sylvanus, were at 100 to 5, and the others from 100 to 2 to 100 to 4. The start was an excellent one. Mistaken went off with a slight lead, and held it for a few yards, Santa Glaus and Pollio being in close attendance, but before the turn was reached Flying Jib rushed to the front and held the lead for, a few moments, when Stockwell came up and assumed command, and went at a rattling place quite clear of ,the ruck, Sweet William, Gudarz, Sylvanus following, and after an interval, Segenhoe, Mistaken, Odd Trick, and Jessie, the balance of.the field being close behind, with Lord Burghley bringing, up the rear. At the turn into the straight Stockwell looked like a winner, but The Assyrian rapidly Sot on terms with him, and, passing Dafein, Sweet Willliatn, and Gudarz, nobly answered the call made on him, and came very fast to the front. Darebin made a splendid but unsuccessful effort to Teach the pride of place, but after a splendid finish The Assyrian won by half a length from Stockwell, while Gudarz was about the same distance to the rear in the third place, Sweet William fourth, and Darebin a good fifth, Sting next, and Lord Burghley absolutely last. The race was run during blinding rain. Time—3 min 40sec. The following table shows the winners of the Melbourne Cup since 1861 :

There was a very large attendance at Tatteraall’s last night, and the ring appeared in much better spirits than they had been in since the Derby was run. The victory of The Assyrian saved them very bad books on the doubles, as Navigator had been taken very largely by the public in doubles with most of the Cup favorites. The starting price of The Assyrian was 100 to 3. The colt is owned by Mr Allison, of Adelaide, the theatrical agent, and Mr Bamtield, an Adelaide Bookmaker. They win LB,OOO by his victory. Mr Jones, a stockbroker, of Ballarat, backed The Assyrian to win L 2,000, and Allen and Joseph, of Melbourne, each laid him in a double with Navigator, for LI,OOO each. There are no very large winners amongst the ring, and, taken throughout, the public have have had the best of the ber.tmg, the ring being hit in eleven out of twelve events. The public were generally disappointed about the performance of Sweet William, Little Jack, Mistaken, and Sting, all of whom were held, in having doubles with Navigator, and appeared so good that very little was laid off. In doubles under £I,OOO they were also extensively held, but most of the money was laid off by the small investors as soon as they got one
