■ Ashburton Guardian Office, Monday Afternoon. Mr Alfred Harrison Reports his weekly sale as follows .—On Saturday. July 29th, very few horses were entered, but every one was sold. Pigs are a trifle better, about 42 being entered, every pen being sold. Cows, L 7 12 s6d and L 4; steers. L 3, L 3, and L2 16s ; calves, ns to 15s; fowls, is 6d to 2s 4d per pair; turkeys, 7s per pair. Qircase pork, 3d per lb; potatoes, 40s to 65s per ton ; carrots, 40s per ton ; barley, 3® P er bushel; chick wheat, 3s to 3s 6d per bushel ; oats, 3s per bushel. Tea, 21s, guaianteed. Harness sold well. A large quantity of fruit and forest trees sold readily; furniture and effects attracted a fair amount of attention; altogether, a good sale was effected, the attendance being a large one. Money is tight, which is a good indication that people generally are sober, and. conduct of busi css is upon a far more sound basis. London Seed TradeMessrs John Shaw and Sons, of 37 M-nrk f London, E.C., report through their agent (Mr Leonard W. Blake, of Christchurch), that the market during the month ending June 15th was, as might be expected, extremely quiet. Of course there was no demand for sowing purposes ; neither was there the slightest speculation going on in anything. It was early to speak of the prospects of the new crops, but fully confirmed advices had been received from the D tilted States and Canada, stating that the red clover plant in both of those parts had been, to a very great extent, winter-killed. The bird seed tirade continued exceedingly dull, with slightly lower rates for hemp seed. Linseed was slow of sale at easier prices. Mustard and rape seed were held at former rates. The Board of Trade returns, just published, showed that for the five months ending May 31st, 1882. the imports into the ¥nited Kingdom of clover and grass seeds were 242,614 cwts.,, value 1-545,809 against 188,851 cwts, value 1452,223 for the corresponding five months of 1881.
