Ashburton Guardian Office, Monday Afternoon. Mr T. Bullock reports, for the week ending July 22nd :—Horse Market —At the Bazaar, Burnstt street, on Saturday, 22 horses were entered for the day’s sale, comprising draughts, light harness horses, hacks, etc. There was a large attendance of country settlers, and for anything like good useful farm hoises there was a very keen bidding, and all entries of this description were sold. Out of ihe total number entered, viz. 22, I sold 10, at the following prices :—Medium draughts, young, 3 to 5 years old, brought Ll 7 10s to L 24 103; ditto, aged, Ll2 ids. Ll 4 10s, Lis ss; unbroken colt, 3 years old, Ll 4 10s I may state that for this description there are a number of in?uiries, at which there are purchasers at from .16 to L2O, provided they are of the right stamp. Aged and inferior draughts are difficult to get rid of, buyers being rather inclined to give a few pounds more for young stock, and those that are chaaging hands are selling at a very low price indeed. The same remark applies to hacks—there appears to be no demand for them. Scrubbers, from Li to L 4. Mr Alfred Harrison reports his weekly sale as follows On Tuesday, July 19th, I held a sale of fruit and forest tree?, at my rooms, when an enormous quantity were sold, in all about 20,000 of all kinds. The trees were in firstclass order, and elicited good competition, every lot being cleared to satisfaction of buyer and seller. Saturday, July 22, weekly sale— A few medium horses were entered, but part changing hands. Pigs looked a little better, some selling up to 17s 6d ; fowls, is to 3s per pair; dncks, 4s 6d per pair; calves, 5 s to 10s; potatoes, 40s to 50s per ton; carrots, 35 per ton; onions, to id; tea, 21s, guaranteed; carcase pork, 2d to 3d per lb. A large quantity of harness and sundries sold fairly well, the attendance being very good.
