Ashburton Guardian Office, ■ Friday Afternoon. There has been very little business done in tile grain market during the week, but prices remain very firm, owing to the favorable advices received from the Home markets. Through wet weather the daiqage to the English crops has been severe, and values here will bo, most probably, fairly high for some time to come. Good wheats have been offering at from 4s 8d to Bs, according to place of delivery and condition of samples. Spring seed varieties have been in demand, and for prime samples good prices are realised. Flour remains at previous quotations, with only a moderate business doing. There have been very few transactions in oats, and ‘ the market remains very quiet. Barley is enquired after for malting purand finds a ready sale at 4s 4J to 4s fid. The weather has been extremely cold during the week, but on the whole is seasonable for this time of the year. Ploughing for spring sowing is being carried oh very briskly. Already some crops are coming out of the ground extremely well.' ' New Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited.—A produce telegram addressed to them, dated London, July 18, 1872, quotes'as foil aws;—Wool; Market unchanged. Up to date 300,000 bales have arrived. Wheat: Market quiet. New Zealand is worth 51s 6d per 496 lbs. Tallow : Market quiet. Best mutton is worth 445, and best beef 43s per cwt. Corn Excahnge report for the week ending Friday evening, the 21st inst.—Business in the grain trade continues exceedingly quiet, with values Tor the most part unchanged. Buyers appear unwilling to increase stocks at the prices ruling, at the same time unwilling to part with their goods excepting at remunerative prices; a feeling seems to prevail that the high rates ruling will experience a relapse. —Wheat : Good milling quality, 4s lod to 5s per bushel, f.0.b.; second quality, 4s 3d to 4s 6d per bushel; chick wheat, 3s 3d to 4s; seed wheat, Ss 3d to Ss 6d per bushel. —Oats: A slightly increased demand is visible for feed samples; values, however, are unchanged at 3s id to 3s 3d per bushel; milling samples, 3s 2d to 3s 3d per bushel.—Barley: Prime mailing samples are in good demand, and saleable at from 4s 6d to 4s yd per bushel; second quality malting is almost entirely neglected, prices nominal; feed quality, 3s 3d to 3s fid per bushel.—Grass SeedUA good deal of business has been transacted during the past week; thoroughly clean samples are worth from 5® t° Ss fid per bushel, indifferently well dressed according to sample; cocksfoot, per lb.—Potatoes: Little or no business Las been transacted during the week; quotations are nominally 35s to 37s fid per ton at country stations, sacks extra. —Cheese and Butter: 7#d per lb. for the forn.er, the latter is id. .
