A report is current in literary circles that Mrs Alexander Carlyle, better known as Miss Mary Carlyle Aitken, intends after Mr Fronde has finished his present biographical work, to publish an independent volume, which will give her recollections of her uncle. “ What is meant by conscience ? ” said a schoolmaster to his class. Tho almost simultaneous reply of halt the class was, “ A hinward monitor.” An inspector who happened to be present enquired : “ And what do you understand by a monitor ?
