The question of the abolition of the stock lax has been referred to the Tariff Commission, now sitting. Sale of Sheep. Sydney, Yesterday. Messrs Mort and Co.’s annual sale of stud sheep was concluded to-day. The attendance at the auction has been large, and keen competition was experienced for the various lots offered. The bidding throughout was spirited. 951 sheep have been sold, realising a total of 1,2,025.

The Markets. New Zealand wheat, 5s id; New Zealand oats, 3s 6d; maize, 5s id. Sugar Company’s No. 1 pieces, L 35. Amalgamated. The firm of Messrs Mort and Cc., wool brokers and stock and station agents, haas been amalgamated with that of Messrs Goldsborough and Co. The present partners in the former firm will continue the active management of the combined company, and will retain a large interest as shareholders. Tenders are now invited by the company for the erection of warehouses on a large scale near Darling Harbour, providing storage capacity for 50,000 bales of wool. Stuck Up. The branch of the Australasian Joint Stock Bank at Grafton was stuck up to-day by a bushranger, who, after gagging the accountant, carried off notes and gold to the value of L 2,900. The robber is still at large. Resigned. The Hon. John Lucas, M.L.C., who was praintifif in a recent action against the Government for compensation for land taken at Darling Harbour, has resigned his appointment as trustee of the National Park at Port Hacking, and his resignation has been accepted by the Government. The Hero. Sydney, To-day. Sailed, yesterday afternoon—Hero, for Auckland. Defence of Sydney Harbour. A suggestion has been made that Government should purchase two gunboats for the defence of Sydney Harbour. Wheat, Flour, and Freights. Adelaide, Yesterday. Wheat is quoted at 6s. There is a fair demand for town flour, which is unchanged at Ll 4 per ton; country brands, Ll 3. Freights are dull, and without change.
