BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the above took place last evening. Present — His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors St Hill, Roberts, Bird, Bullock, and Harrison. SPECIAL MEETING. Prior to the ordinary business being taken, a special meeting to confirm a resolution approving the new by-law relating to cattle wandering, was held. The new by-law was duly adopted. mayor’s statement. The Mayor reported the overdraft at the Bank to be LBl5 Cs 4d. Amounts i eceiv'ed since last meeting : Rents of reserves, LSI 10s; earth sold, L2 6s; carriers’ licences, L2 ; oxcsse, L6O ; dogs_ LI 10s ; rates, LGllßs Cd ; pans, LI Is Bd. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read as follows From the New Zealand Farmers Cooperative Association, Christchurch (circular), asking the Council’s co-operation in getting the tariff charges on the railway lines reduced.—lt was resolved that the Association be assured of the Council’s co-operation, and that the members for the district be asked to give effect to the wishes of the Council on the subject. From Mr Joaopli Ivcso, iisKing for two months leave of absence to attend to his Parliamentary duties, and offering his services to the Borough if ho could be of any use.—The request was granted and the offer accepted. From the Borough Licensing Committee, authorising the payment to their Clerk of LlO per annum in return for his services.—After soma discussion it was resolved that the amount be paid. FIRE BRIGADE. The Fire Brigade Committee of the Council reported as follows : —“ In answer to a request made by the Fire Brigade, your Committee have to recommend as follows : That the Brigade having decided to remain upon the site now occupied by them, the Council allot to each, the Library and the Brigade, a certain portion of the reserve and the fencing and improvement of the buildings of the Brigade lie postponed until such allotment is made. Also that the present regulations with respect to gas remain in force until some person is appointed to sleep upon the Brigade’s premises to look after it, but that the gas should be immediately lighted in case of emergency.” engineers’ report. This report was re id as follows : —“ 1. Planting ; Two members of the Planting Committee- Crs Harrison and St Hill—attended to discuss the question referred to them by the Council of planting the liver terrace between the Old Men’s Home and the North-west Town Belt. It was,however, agreed to recommend that the boundary of the Alford Forest road enclosing the piece of land be properly surveyed and pegged, and that tenders bo called for fencing and ploughing the land. 2. The Labor Gang : The gang have been engaged in forming foctpaths in Cameron street East and part of Cass street (near Butler’s Hotel), fixing and altering bridges over side channels in Burnett street West, clearing channel in river at head of race, carting away rubbish from streets, attending to water supply, &c. We enclose a letter from the surveyor to the Upper Ashburton Road Board, referring to certain damage done on the Alford Forest road, at the junction of the North-west Town Belt, which, as affecting matters of detail, we submit might be referred to the Wcrks Committee.” —[The letter referred to was read, an I stated the damage to have been caused bj' theßorough water-race.]—With i-egard to Clause 1, it was resolved that tend n rs be called for the work. Clause 2 was referred to the Engineers. INSPECTOR OF NUISANCES. The Inspector’s report was read and adopted. RATES. It was resolved to sue for all outstanding lates after 31st inst. IMMIGRATION COTTAGES. It was resolved that the cottages already decided upon should be sold. HAVELOCK STREET. It was resolved that the members for the district should be asked to use their best endeavors to get Havelock street opened across the railway line. A NEW SAFE. Cr St Hill’s notice of motion having reference to the purchase of a new safe to replace the present one, which is too small, was put and carried, and the matter left in the hands of the Mayor to arrange. CARRIERS’ LICENSES. Carriers’ licenses were granted to F. Betts and James Edwards. BURNING RUBBISH. Permission was granted to Messrs P. E. Fooks and C. Braddell to burn rubbish in their gardens. NOTICE OF MOTION. Cr Harrison gave notice of motion for next meeting —“ That the sum of L 25 be devoted to planting Baring square west. ” ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to LlOl 13a Id were passed for payment, and the Council adjourned.
