HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

An ordinary meeting of the above took place last evening at Mr Jones’ upper room. There was a large attendance, Mr Alfred Harrison in the chair. Mr R. Elston read a paper on the cultivation of vines under glass, after which a long discussion ensued on the relative qualities of old and new bones as fertilisers genor-' ally, but more especially as a bottom for the vine trench. The opinions expressed on the subject were so conflicting that Mr S, E. Poyutz suggested that a paper should be prepared, showing the chemical qualities of bones in their different stages. The idea was approved, and it will be carried out at an early date. Mr Elston received the usual vote of thanks for his paper, and then the question of the desirability of holding a spring show in connection with the Society was discussed. Ultimately it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Collins, that the matter be deferred until after the annual meeting in May nest, the great objection raised to the holding of a spring show being that it would be impossible to get up two successful exhibitions a spring show and an autumn show—within three months of each other, the number of exhibitors who have hitherto supported the Society being limited. After the passing of sundry accounts the meeting adjourned. Mr Poyntz will read the next paper, the subject as yet being undecided upon.
