ALARMING RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
Narrow Escape of the Passengers.
[by telegraph.] Wellington, To-day. A serious accident that was very nearly attended with disastrous consequences, occurred on Saturday night on the Wairarapa line, near Waitaki. Two trucks laden with timber ran off the rails and fell over a steep embankment. The passenger carriages and engine fortunately kept on the rails until the couplings connecting them with the trucks gave way. No one was hurt, but the escape was wonderful. No cause is yet known for the accident. At the point where the accident occurred, there is a sharp curve, and the grade is iin 37. Several trucks left the rails at the same place some months ago. The two trucks which tumbled over on Saturday were about the centre of the train. Two other trucks were pulled off the rails, but not over the embankment.
