A Poser. — A facetious correspondent of a contemporary offers a prize of a Revised New Testament to any person who will give a correct answer to the query : Who was Cain’s wife ?

Destruction of Forests. — A writer ir Harper's Magazine observes :—A countrj cannot continue to be populous or highlj civilised when its forests or their equiva lent in coal are lost to it. But this loss has been experienced by many nations. The whole Eastern world, as well as the countries of which we have spoken, were once wooded. The Roman and Greek writers assure us of this. But vast regions of Europe and Asia, by wars and wantonness and imprudence, have been stripped of their forests. A belt of woodland stretching from the Pyrenees to the Himalayas have been swept away, fand that whole region, once fertile and populous, now barely sustains a people scanty in numbers. It is a significant fact that great deserts now occupy the original sea: of the human race, and extend on every route of their migrations. Humbolt is reported as saying:—“Men in all climates seem to bring upon future generations two calamities at once ; a want of fuel and a scarcity of water.” The two come alike from the destruction of the forests.

They will find it the best means of lessening their agony, and, assisted by Holloway’s Pills, the surest way of overcoming their disease. More need not be said than to request a few days’ trial of the safe and soothing treatment, by which the disease will ultimately be completely swept away. Pains that would make a giant shudder are assuaged without difficulty by Holloway’s easy and inexpensive remedies, which comfort by moderating the throbbing vessels and calming the excited nerves.—Advt
