BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the above was held last evening.' Present— His Worship the Majror, and Crs Roberts, Orr; St. Hill, Friedlander, Bird, and Parkin. mayor’s statement. The Mayor reported the overdraft at the Bank to be L 950 13s Bd. Received since last meeting : Excise licenses, L 220;4 0; iog do, LI 10a; rents of cottages, LI 4s ; rates, Lll2 15s lOd ; total amount of rates collected to date, L 376 Is lOd. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read as follows : From Messrs Garrick and Cowliahaw enclosing lease of reserve 767, section 210, to New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company; for execution by the Council. From Department of Justice asking for information as to tost of carrying out Licensing Act in the Borough. From Railway Department re services of an engineer to superintend railway crossings at Burnett street and Tancred street.—lt was resolved that the terms mentioned in the letter be accepted.

From the Timaru Wreck Relief Fund informing the Council that subscription lists close on July 31st. From Clerk to Licensing Bench enclosing list of publicans’ licenses. Prom Mr P. Wilding asking Council’s sanction to Mr Mcßae retaining right-of-way communicating with the stables from Baring square. —Resolved the request be granted, subject to approval of Council’s solicitor.

From Messrs Mitchell and Turner applying for supply of water from race on Winter’s road.—Granted. From the promoters of the Sydney Juvenile Industrial Exhibition, inviting the co-operation of the council. REPORT OP COMMITTEE ON IMMIORATION COTTAGES. This report was read as follows : " Your Committee appoinled to inspect and report on the cottages on reserves 1689 and 1690 have the honor to inform the Council that the cottages above alluded to have been examined, and your Committee recommend as follows : —(1.) Reserve 1659, East fcßelt; Your Committee recommend that one good cottage be well floored and varnished and retained by the Council, and that the other four be 501d.—(2.) Reserve 1690, West Belt: Your Committee recommend that three of these cottages be reserved from sale, to be applied to charitable aid purposes, one for the new Are engine station, and one sold. The cottages number ten, of which five will be retained and five sold.”—The report was adopted. engineers’ report. The Engineers to the Council reported as follows :—" Footpath Shingle ; The contractor, Mr F. Lowe, wishes to transfer his contract to Mr Bennett, of Trevorton, on account of his not having sufficient strength in teams to deliver the shingle with despatch.—The Labor Gang have been engaged in repairing and metalling patches in East street, clearing side channels, and carting mud and rubbish, shingling footpaths in Park street, making and fixing bridges and culverts, spreading shingle for contractor in West and Park streets, scooping channel in river bed at head of water-race, attending to water supply, etc. ” —The report was adopted. inspector of nuisances report. The report of the Inspector, which was of the usual character, was read and adopted. [Or. Harrison here entered the room, and apologised for his unavoidable absence earlier in the evening.] SHINGLING. The shingli g of footpath near Mr Lancaster s house was referred to the Works Committee. FIRE BRIGADE Or. Harrison submitted the following resolutions passed at a meeting of the Brigade held on June 24th. They were as follows :—" That considering it would be for the greater safety and protection of the ratepayers’ property generally, the Brigade resolves to remain on their present site, and would respectfully suggest that the Council fence in the portion reserved for their use and also place a cottage on the section, in compliance with resolutions made by Cr. St. Hill and carried at Council’s meeting.”—"That the Brigade consider it most advisable that the lamp should burn the whole night on dark nights, and would ask the reason why the pipes of the lamp connected to the metre has been taken off 1 Also asking that the pipe be reconnected to the metre to permit of the lamp being lighted in case of emergency.”—Referred to the Fire Committee to report on.

A NEW SAFE WANTED. Or. St. Hil! referred to the fact that the present safe used by the Town Clerk was altogether too small to contain all the municipal books, papers, etc., some which might be destroyed in the event of a fire breaking out. He then tabled a notice of motion for consideration at next meeting, to the effect that a new and larger safe be purchased, part cost of same to be defrayed from sale of the old one. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to L 145 Is were passed for payment, and the Council adjourned.
